does tom....

that's the teaser to get someone to answer this question, and perhaps it'll travel to the man himself through the ether:
are there any TR books on tape/cd/ipod? i hate it when authors read their own works, (save for ginsburg) but i'd love to have a less-bulky way of transporting his contraband over state lines.

Wild ducks is in my opinion Tom Robbins' 2nd worst book, which, of course, means it's still pretty darn good. But it's miles behind all his novels, and definitely somewhere above Villa Incognito. What was up with Villa Incognito anyways?

          I liked Villa Incognito.

it was definitely nothing new, after reading all his other stuff, but that fuckin fox was shifty.

i thought it was commentary on the changing of the guard from the cold war era to the axis of evil; the hippy days are over, time to come out of the jungle. maybe that's too simple. maybe it was more a story about tanukis and heroin, but that was metaphor. for what? i have my opinions, but it remains one of my favorites for the symbolism and my personal interp.

I definitely agree that there was some tone to it relating to the "changing of the guard" as you put it, a sort of lament for the post 9-11 era. Don't get me wrong, I liked the book, I mean, hey, it's Tom Robbins! How can you not love it? I just didn't think it was quite in the same category as his other novels. Wherefore art thou now Tom? How about a new one? Please!!!!!

this is sort of off topic, but did you know that Tom narrates the movie Even Cowgirls Get the Blues?

what's crazy is I don't think you can even find it on Netflix which has EVERYthing. It's not that bad.....c'mon. It has Uma Thurman in it- enough said! Worth renting!

It's awful. awful. I think it came out about the same time as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and I feel like the director was going for that same style somewhat.

normal novels are hard enough to convert to movie, because it's so difficult to take out all the detail and have it still make sense. imagine how hard it would be to adapt a TR book. impossible. a valiant effort, and i appreciate it, but in this case it didn't work.

mr. miagi, keanu reeves, rain phoenix... it's almost as if TR casted the movie too.

despite all this bad press, i'm want to find it and confirm. movies like this are usually at my local library. video store throwbacks or donated, for sure. keanu, miagi, uma? sounds like a winner already!!

Sounds that way, but sadly, it's not. It suffers from Otter's Law of Books made into Movies - The quality of the film is inverseley proportional to the quality of the book. Always. In other words, the better the book, the worse the movie.

The problem is that it's an entirely different method of conveying information - and there's much more information contained in a book than on film. It would be like writing an essay about Beethoven's 9th Symphony - there's no way to convey the same info.

Since Cowgirls was a terriffic book, one of my top 5 favorites ever, the movie was, in accordance with Otter's Law, atrociously dissapointing. The script captured roughly 15% of the book's story. None of The Chink's history or adventures or pontificating was included - one line about 'the earth is alive, blah blah...' then fade to another scene. Very dissapointing. Especially because Pat Morita would have made a great Chink - had he been given the whole character to work with.

Don't get me started on movie versions of other great books. Starship Troopers? Mists of Avalon? Dune? Ulysses? Even LOTR had it's problems. I just hope and pray to the gods that no one ever attempts a movie version of Stranger in a Strange Land. Ugh.

It's on the Flix; that's the place I picked it up from. To each her own on whether or not it was '"good". My vote is no.

Look, Uma has her special thing and all, but that's not all as far as this movie is concerned.
And don't slobber on the screen, it looks bad.

                        :D
