I am re-reading Jitterbug Perfume and I have decided to try to make the perfume. It calls for
Lemon citron
jasmine
ambergris
extract of beet pollen
I've got the lemon and the jasmine, but can anyone recommend a good place to get some ambergris, and what the heck can I use for extract of beet pollen????

Tue, September 5, 2006 - 11:14 PMooh. I think I know someone who made Jitterbug Perfume...but I don't know what they did for the beet pollen either. I'll see if I can find out if they actually found it.... -

Thu, September 7, 2006 - 5:09 PMi hope you'll update us all on your progress in both obtaining the ingrediants and also the end-product. i forget what jitterbug perfum was supposed to do? fountain of youth, or the supreme juice of pan? i like the idea of both, i just hope your concoction isn't as unattainable as both. -

Fri, September 8, 2006 - 8:25 PMokay well I still can't find any substitute for the beet pollen extract so far -

Re: making the juice
Sat, September 9, 2006 - 7:00 PMSo, my friend Lou called me from the farmers market and was sweet enough to ask the beet farmer about the pollen.
Apparently, none of the farmers let the beets pollinate because the polination season is after the harvesting season, so they would have to let some of the crop remain in order for them to pollinate. The farmers won't let that happen because they want to sell the beets.
Sooooooo, if I want beet pollen, I have to grow some beets myself. It looks like my backyard is going to have a slight makeover......up comes the grass, and in goes the beets..... -

Re: making the juice
Mon, September 25, 2006 - 8:27 PMSo, I found an organic farmer willing to sell me some beet pollen. The funny thing was that when she asked why I wanted it, I said, "to make perfume". She immediately said, "HAVE YOU BEEN READING TOM ROBBINS???"
Cracked me up!
I love it!!! -

Re: making the juice
Tue, January 30, 2007 - 7:56 PMI have not given up! Infact, I have decided that I am going to make it for myself for my birthday. So, can anyone suggest the best place for jasmine?
I'm talking top of the line, bingo pajama jasmine
and top of the line lemon citron
i think I may have found someone to supply the beet pollen. There is a woman in Ireland (I think) who is doing research on beet pollen and I sent her an email requesting to buy her samples once her research is done. I am hoping and praying she answers my email.
I don't know why I am such a purist. I'm sure I could probably substitute something else earthy for the beet pollen, but I feel like I would be missing out. It was, afterall, the whole backbone of the storyline. -

Re: making the juice
Fri, February 16, 2007 - 8:05 AMthe Essential Oil Company (online) from Portland, Oregon has high quality essential oils.
Also if you have never experienced 'da boof" of Beet pollen come to Oregon when the sugar beet seed fields are in full funk. One summer day I stopped and grabbed a bit from a field and put it in the back seat of the car then went on to a bookstore, locking the car of course...when we returned Oh My Goodness!!!
The perfume was concocted to mask the scent of Pan who was invisible but still malodorous!
I've often wondered how to extract the beet pollen, figuring I could steal into a sugar beet field some night...... -

Re: making the juice
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 5:33 AMWithout knowing the first thing about beets or their pollen, I'm assuming the pollen is only created when you let the beet plant go to seed, probably shoot out some stalk of some sort with flowers, which then release pollen.
In an commercial growth venture they would have no reason to let the beets go to seed I don't think, so likely, to extract pollen, you may just have to grow your own beets and let them go to seed.
Once again, I know nothing about beets, just speculating.

Re: making the juice
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 8:54 PMyou're right. My problem is that I can barely keep my lawn alive WITH AUTOMATIC SPRINKLERS. I can't even imagine trying to grow beets..... -
-
Re: making the juice
Sat, February 24, 2007 - 6:49 AMlol! Maybe that's the solution not the problem, you're lawn needs to be filled with wild beets going to seed instead of manicured lawns! -

Re: making the juice
Sun, March 11, 2007 - 9:31 AMOMG!!!! I met a guy who makes perfume as a hobby and he lives near beet fields. I sent him a copy of the book and he's become A FAN........so..........he is going to make me this perfume.
He found a beet field that is willing to let him collect the pollen in July, so I will have the real thing!!!!!!!!! I am so happy!!!!!!! -

Re: making the juice
Thu, May 17, 2007 - 8:55 PMwell, he can't harvest them until June, so I'm just waiting....
but, yes, this field lets them go to pollenate so they can reseed other fields
In the meantime, I'm trying to find the other ingredients. I was actually looking to get some ambergris online yesterday. There is a company in Italy that sells the real thing. -

Re: making the juice
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 7:54 PMwell, it's back to the drawing board for the beet pollen extract. My friend said he tried to distill it and it smells like bong water. Nasty! I'm trying to think of other earthy scents that would work.
Yup I will definiely let you know when it's done and how it smells. I've had some pretty amazing offers for exchanges. There is one woman who is a glassmaker and she made 2 bottles with pan on them - one for her and one for me! So cool! Someone else offered me some ambergris in exchange for some of the bouf... -

Re: making the juice
Sun, October 14, 2007 - 7:32 PMI DID IT!!!
It smells divine!!! I can't believe I hadn't made it sooner. I ended up using Deer Musk as the base because it's one of the most powerful aphrodesiacs, and I figured that would make Pan happy....
This perfume ROCKS, and I've been wearing it everyday. Now I just need to practice the dance and find some bandaloops to dance with. -

Re: making the juice
Sun, October 21, 2007 - 4:30 AMAh, now of course you realize you've triggered the avalanche, and will have half (all?) the tribe clammoring at your door to get their hands on it.
So let me be the first to pop the decisive question, and to start queueing up: what would it take to get you to agree to send out samples? -

Re: making the juice
Thu, November 15, 2007 - 3:40 PMI can be bribed....what are you offering? I can only imagine what a fan of Tom Robbins might come up with........
But seriously, send me a PM with your addy and such and I will get a sniff or two out to you. Just a sniff, though, because it really was wildly expensive to make. -

Re: making the juice
Thu, November 15, 2007 - 3:44 PMHey I forgot to tell you guys that my friend, the perfumer in Oregon, DID collect some beet pollen for me and he tried to distill it with disasterous results. He said that in the end it smelled like bong water....so, I ended up using a base of real musk instead. I figured that Pan would have probably liked musk a lot since it has a lot of phermone.
Coincidentally, the last time I wore the bouf, I was at the West Hollywood Halloween parade and I was pounced by PAN!!! It was so funny. I'll have to get that pic up in my photo album for y'all. -

Re: making the juice
Thu, February 14, 2008 - 8:28 AMSo...............do you think bong water would be an acceptable substitute for the beet pollen? tee hee
One day some years back on a nice hot day, my kids and a girlfriend and I took off across the valley for an adventure. We stopped at a sugar beet seed field and grabbed a stalk of the funky stuff. Drove on to a bookstore where we left the beet in the car (nice hot day) for a couple of hours. When we unlocked the car and climbed in....
OHMYGOD/DESS the boof!
All the dirty socks in the Willamette Valley couldn't have raised such a smell. We laughed our asses off. AND rolled down the window and lit some incense. AND put the boofy stuff in the trunk! -

Re: making the juice
Fri, July 11, 2008 - 8:19 PMthat's pretty funny! I can't say I've had the pleasure of smelling a nice fresh beet funk. There aren't too many beet fields running amok here in Los Angeles.
