Re: Other writers? gasp!
Thu, July 1, 2004 - 1:18 PMWell, for light silly reading, I am a sucker for Harry Potter, I blame my Mom for leaving them on my coffee table. If you want something trippy and bizarre...go for House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. He is the brother of singer Poe. They both started projects based on their experiences growing up in a house where odd things seemed to happen. Her album was called "Haunted" (it's great!!) and his book was called House of Leaves. This isn't just a standard haunted house book though, I've never seen anything like it. Depending on the pacing of the book, the words become closer together or farther apart. During a part in the book where the character is in a maze, the words are also put into a puzzle so you feel something like what the character feels. There are stories within stories...this book is something like I have never ever seen or read.
And there you have it :-) -

Thu, July 1, 2004 - 1:25 PMI agree with the House of Leaves recommendation. It's extremely creative (although I must admit that I think I got lost a couple of times). I read the book first, and then discovered Poe- she's awesome! -

Re: Other writers? gasp!
Thu, July 1, 2004 - 1:30 PMVery groovy, I discovered Poe first by accident, she opened for Depeche Mode and I was blown away. Mark also came out onto stage and read from House of Leaves while she played. Fantastical show!
I make up my own words and spellings for things hope no one minds to awfully.

Re: Other writers? gasp!
Thu, July 1, 2004 - 1:46 PMA couple of books that I've read lately that were interesting. . .
Oryx and Crake, by Margaret Atwood. A "speculative" tale about presumably the last human alive, tells the story through his memories leading up to the catastrophic event that leaves him living naked in a tree with a sheet and renaming himself the Snowman. Story is darker than TR, but Atwood has a dry sense of humor that is irreverent in its own way. It has interesting commentary on genetic engineering, human relations, sex, and child pornography. And similar to TR, the characters are all studies in contradiction.
The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Salmon Rushdie - This one is pretty dense and long. But it tells a fascinating story of an Indian diva rock star. As the book gets going you realize that something is a little off. And then Rushdie starts fucking with linear time. Definitely interesting reading for people who liked the clockworks discussion in Cowgirls or the Today is Tomorrow stuff in Fierce Invalids. -

Christopher Moore has a zany philosophical bent rather like TR.
His stuff is really fun.
I'd start with Lamb. -

Re: Other writers? gasp!
Mon, July 12, 2004 - 3:51 PMBarry Hughart. If Tom Robbins wrote fantasy novels about ancient China, he'd be Barry Hughart.

Re: Other writers? gasp!
Thu, October 7, 2004 - 1:33 PMI just finished Sexus by H. Miller- wonderfully crazy and amazing, the thing about that one is that it's about his life in NY as a younger mn, before he started writing, but he wrote it when he was older, looking back- so it's his great escapades of youth written by the experienced writer, it's great and hilarious, of course! -

Re: Other writers? gasp!
Fri, October 8, 2004 - 7:39 PMI too have read everthing Tom Robbins has written to date and damn if I haven't had a hard time finding another author that is as uniquely engaging since picking up Robbins. A book that I read before I read any Tom Robbins and highly recommend is "Geek Love" by Kathryn Dunn, it is a pretty zany story. -

Re: Other writers? gasp!
Sat, October 9, 2004 - 7:30 AMOne thing I found useful for finding new reading material: In 'Half Asleep In Frog Pajamas", when Larry is giving the slide show to Gwen, he stops on the photo of the "Visiting Faculty" at Timbuktu U. Write down the names of the visiting faculty, go to the library, and do an author search for those names. Oh, and definitely read "The Sirius Mystery" by Robert Temple, which TR credits at the end of the book.

Mon, October 25, 2004 - 2:10 PMI haven't read chuck palahniuk. Isn't he the person who wrote Fight Club? Is there a particular book that you like?
I am working on One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, which has been an interesting foray into magical realism. I picked up the House of Blue Leaves (see above) I will report back when I get to it. -

Sun, February 27, 2005 - 8:44 PMTwo poets mentioned by Tommy and enjoyed by myself-- Charles Simic and Jim Harrison. You definitely pick up some of his elements in the poetic absurdity. Go, go...and go! -

Mon, February 28, 2005 - 6:27 PMVenn Diagram of recently read books and recommended books:
Overlapping portion:
I, Etcetera by Susan Sontag (her overlooked fiction--neato)
The Executioner's Song by Norman Mailer
Eknath Easwaren's translation of The Dhammapada (neatoburrito)
I'm reading Flowers for Algernon right now (late-start highschool program), and there's a lot of peer pressure to cry while reading. -

Re: Other writers? gasp!
Mon, May 9, 2005 - 4:11 AMcheck out arl Hiiasn, he's not as "deep" but he's laugh out loud funny. -

Re: Other writers? gasp!
Wed, May 18, 2005 - 11:28 PMDo you mean Carl Hiaasen? Maybe I've spelled it wrong too... the guy who wrote "Strip Tease" and other hilarious mysteries set in Florida?
He is lighter than TR, and really funny.
For something different, I'd suggest the comic series " The Invisibles" created by Grant Morrison. You can get them all in trade paperbacks now - an amazing journey drawing from many similar sources and experiences. I had never read a comic book before this, and it converted me. It's best read out loud, by someone who does a great british accent. -
