thankfully, this tribe's existence reminded me how much i like the words of tom robbins bouncing around my head.

does anybody else feel the need to refresh their internal fierce invalid when it fades from memory? i feel it right now. maybe jitterbug perfume is what the doctor would order? all i know is i find my intellectual compass is revitalized when i read his work.

I am re-reading Jitterbug Perfume and I have decided to try to make the perfume. It calls for
Lemon citron
jasmine
ambergris
extract of beet pollen

I've got the lemon and the jasmine, but can anyone recommend a good place to get some ambergris, and what the heck can I use for extract of beet pollen????

that's the teaser to get someone to answer this question, and perhaps it'll travel to the man himself through the ether:
are there any TR books on tape/cd/ipod? i hate it when authors read their own works, (save for ginsburg) but i'd love to have a less-bulky way of transporting his contraband over state lines.

My Books

As a reader, I can be highly effective,
as books return from their dusty home.
Tom taught me Wild Ducks Fly Backwards,
and geniuses can attract attention on a road.

In Savannah, sign language is needed
in order to be a best man.
But life is all about communication
between Mr. Ego and Mrs. Id.

Custer never learned how to ski,
and Mr. Escobar lost his war,
while Bob Dylan inspired a
troubled American to leave his life.

Even aliens like George Jones.
Afghanis can't shop at REI,
but a backpacker must be fully equiped
to fight a religious crusade.

Prayers are needed more than anything,
even when feeding off a great idea.

An old man blows a siren
trying to get our attention.
A southern man tries to confuse me.

Drifters can be as important
as a migrating movement.
Torillas loaded with mice should
be filled with rice and rolled
like the rock we hear in the background.

A great trilogy was ruined on the big
screen,
again.
Stephen survived a vehicle to continue
his quest to match J.R.R.

Celebrating independence in
a car with that irrational kid
exploring this country again, but
differently.

A family survived a war with luck
and integrity, like the general
who brought us the Coneheads.
Keep it real.

Tom Robbins character quiz

Which Tom Robbins character would you most like to sleep with?
b) Sissy Hankshaw from "Even Cowgirls get the Blues" - what could she do with those thumbs....
c) Plucky Purcell, "Another Roadside Attraction" - the secret monk agent infilitrating football player
c) Amanda from "Another Roadside Attraction"
d) all of the above, all at once
e) none of the above. Prefer: ____________________

Which Tom Robbins character do you most resemble, and why?

I like to think I have Sissy Hankshaw's love of travel, Ellen Cherry's appreciation of the arts, Princess Leigh Cherry's taste for redheads (what was her lover's name in that book??). Who else? I need to brush up on my Jitterbug Perfume characters.

Hi. I'm Lisa, by the way. :)

Alobar on politics

I don't have a copy of Jitterbug Perfume. Could someone give me a good quote from Alobar regarding politics. I remember he said something toward the end about how no matter where he went, he just steered clear of it because no matter how much he cared, he had no control over the outcome. something like that anyway.

and what do you think about that idea?

How to lure the man

So, I went to Seattle this weekend, and I went hunting for Tom on Sunday. Then, when I finally got "near" him, I was wondering what I could do to lure him out? What kind of bait would it take to get Tom to bite?
A beet suit? A red-headed wig? A pack of cigarettes?

Any ideas?

I've been a fan of both for a long time...and now I see why :)

I noticed the commentary from the head perfumer on Tom Robbins & thought I would share...

These, by the way, are the best scented candles I have ever smelled...and I've smelled a lot! They're truly inspired, and now I know by what (or whom) :)

Bibliomancy

Ever fool around with Bibliomancy to get answers to personal questions? Sort of like a tarot reading?

From Wikipedia:
Bibliomancy, also known as Stichomancy and Libromancy, is a form of divination that seeks to know the future by randomly selecting a passage from a book, frequently a sacred text.

Method:

1. Pick a book you believe to hold truth.
2. Balance it on its spine; let it fall open.
3. With eyes closed, touch your finger to any random passage.
4. View the passage as wisdom to your future.

**************************************************************
Well, these TR books definitely reek with truth. So...
My experimental question was, "What's up with my relationship with M?"

Grabbed Half Asleep In Frog Pajamas simply because it seems to get less air time.

My answer:
"Once, in a spasm of sappiness, you asked Q-Jo if she thought your dreams would ever come true. "You aren't talking about dreams," she corrected you, "you're referring to your pathetic bourgeoisie ambitions. Dreams don't come true. Dreams _are_ true."
You thought about that as you tossed and rolled-sleepless, dreamless-through the night, but there were so many thoughts playing bumper cars in your brain that you hadn't more than a few seconds to spend with any particular one before it was rear-ended or broadsided by a a different thought-that then took -its- brief turn leading the pack."

My results are almost spooky.

Hi, all!

I just joined the Tribe and noticed that there was no image for Fierce Invalids that showed up on lists of Tribal memberships, etc. (just the generic gray head with question mark), so I pulled something together and posted it to the Tribe photos section; it's the jpg called "Fierce Invalids Tribe". I think the basic image will be familiar :-). Anyway, if you'd like to use it, O moderator, you're welcome to it.

Wahoo,

So, has anyone else ever driven around to their Robbins-reading friends' houses at night, and covertly left a large perfumed beet on their front doorsteps?

One of the beet recipients gave me an excellent birthday present last year: a dented can o' beans, a dirty sock, a spoon, and-- masterpiece-- a painted stick. The still-life still has a place of honor on a shelf by the Robbins books :-)

Hey ya'll...
this is public knowledge (I found it somewhere online 8 years ago!) so I don't think it's a big deal to post it here... I'm sure Tom would be stoked to get mail from more of his fans. He is known for replying to them. He replied to me within a week, but that was 8 years ago and I have no clue what his response rate/speed is like nowadays that he is older and possibly more famous. His replies to me were hilarious and written in the exact manner of his books...
So here you go:
Tom Robbins
Union of Mad Scientists
P.O. Box 338
LaConner, WA, 98257

Also not sure if this is the current address, but might as well try it out and if it's wrong it can probably be forwarded!
Good luck and please report back what happens!!

I'm currently in the last chapters of 'Even Cowgirls Get the Blues' and the author has made reference to some historical event in Los Angeles in which women are executed, amongst other refences (ch. 113). Does anyone have info on what happened? The other events were actually named,so is this one a fictitious refernce?

I am also a new member...the only two books I've read "still life with woodpecker" and the one I am currently reading. So nice to meet ya'll.

brand newby. tom robbins is definately the contemporary quintessential american literary philosopher of highest distinction. sure, he speaks of us all to us all, regardless of which way our toilette water whirls, but i think it's truly american how he captures migration, interconnectivity and sex, even if the majority of his characters are angelic anti-cowboys, which we all know is the minority of the minority of so-called free-thinkers (disenfranchised seems irrelevant) in this country. how many "get it!" because of how he writes and not what he writes? but that's not my real question.
is oprah, who could be the next messianic (sp?) figure history might digest for future burps of divitiy, more revelational than the words and plots of tom's thoughts. do we need new cars for a fraction of oprah's viewing audience, or do we need a fraction of tom's readers who embrace his world view, in order to make the world a better place? the question has been posed. it's out of my hands.

From noexit.co.uk:

"From beloved and best-selling novelist Tom Robbins comes a collection of non-fiction essays and short fiction, many in print for the first time ever! From tributes such as an ode to redheads, kissing, Diane Keaton, Leonard Cohen, tomato sandwiches and The Doors - to musings, travel essays and art critiques, from short stories to poems and country song lyrics - this is a real treat for Tom's numerous and loyal fans."

He has changed how I think about everyday things. It's really great to find other people who love him as much/more.

I also wanted to add another really awesome book to read. Island by Aldous Huxley Not so funny...but very very cool. I really liked that earlier post with all the book suggestions, I wrote them all down and just wish I had the time to read them!

Mythology/religion

I just finished Skinny Legs & All, my last TR book to read. It's excellent, and now has me on a mission. I'm looking for writings on myth and religion, but specific types.

(I grew up on Greek/Roman mythology, know a little about Norse and Native American, and even less about various others. When I say religion, I'm talking the stories- the "mythlogy of religion").

Okay, so what I'm looking for is:
-some interesting books of the actual myths and stories of religions such as Hindu, Norse, and others I haven't mentioned to broaden my knowledge of mythology in general.

-Comparitive writings on similarities between different myth/rels- something that finds the common denominators and brings them out, that looks at why these exist, the basis of these myths, etc....tracing them back to their roots, I suppose, is the essence of what I"m trying to say.

-TR style of dissection and commentary of myths/rels. Example- his relation of the story of Jezebel in Skinny Legs- how different groups use the idea of it, what actually (or probably) occurred, etc...something more enlightening than just the story or the typical gloss over of meaning.

I am really hoping and looking forward to responses and suggestions! Thanks in advance!

I've started it 3-4 times, gotten a hundred pages in, and put it down.

I'm all about monkeys driving Cadillacs, but I just can't get into this book - I need some bait to get me past my drop off point.

So I started reading Tom Robbins about six months ago and of course I became addicted. Today, sadly, I finished the final book I had to read. I've read them all...and I'm hoping that someone has an idea of when the next book will be coming out. I hope soon and I hope is it better than Villa Incognito because, personally, that was my least favorite of his. But man oh man his metaphors make me want to dance naked in the moonlight.

Ok, so I have never had a Tom Robbins sightings, per se, but I am working on it as a goal before I die. For all of those lucky enough to have seen the man in the flesh (or any other way) please share your experience so we can all live vicariously through you. For those who thought "Sightings" refered to something else, feel free to elaborate, as I'm sure these thoughts would also be intriguing...

Totally identify with King Alobar and babycakes Kudra, inspired by the ol' goat Pan... especially their taking time out to make love every few hundred yards on their cross-country walk in search of... everlasting life!

Switters/Sands Connection

If any of you have seen "Once Upon a time in Mexico" did you catch the similarities between Sands (johnny depps character) & switters? If you look closely, he is carrying around the autobiography of Judy Garland- which basically means he is a closet showtunes freak...also, the CIA/FBI connection is obvious. I know that Depp had a lot of freedom w/ his character, and i think he worked out all the angles of his personality based on the old acronym WWSD (what would switters do?) I'm not trying to say that Once upon a time in mexico is good or anything, i thought it was somewhat interesting, but i think that his character was loosely based on switters

Help, I'm hosting discussion at a book club and I've picked Still Life.

What are your thoughts on Robbin's answer to how to make love stay?

What do you think is the main theme?

I have many thoughts on this, but I would love some feedback.
thanks!
